Renewal is a decision point

Automatic renewal protects continuity, but it can also preserve overlap, shelfware and assumptions that have never been tested.

The seven questions

  • Which material risks is this service expected to change?
  • What evidence shows those outcomes were achieved?
  • Which licensed capabilities are actually being used?
  • Where does the service overlap with another control?
  • What changed in the business or threat model since purchase?
  • What alternative commercial and delivery routes now exist?
  • What would we design differently if buying today?

Start early enough to retain leverage

The useful work happens before the quote arrives. Review notice periods, consumption, incidents, service quality and future requirements while there is still time to test an alternative or reshape the scope.

A renewal should confirm value, improve the service or release budget for a more important risk. Anything else is administration.
